Salute to Youth Competition
Rules and Procedures
2007-2008 Season
 

Eligibility: Applicants must be full time high school (9-12 grades) or undergraduate college students born in 1983 or later. They must be participants in their appropriate school ensembles. Previous winners are ineligible to participate, unless performing on a different instrument. Exceptions may be made in extraordinary circumstances as deemed appropriate by the audition committee.

Music selection must be standard concerto repertoire (generally single movement) or approved by the Music Director. Soloists selected to perform with the Symphony must perform the same work and movement upon which they auditioned. Appropriate double concertos are allowed.

Application Procedure: Applicants will submit a good quality CD or tape recording of their complete selection with piano accompaniment along with the attached application form and a non-refundable $35 entry fee postmarked no later than August 31, 2007. Recordings will not be returned. Additionally, please submit a 250 word biography and photo with your application for promotional purposes.

Finalists will be required to audition in person at Dixie State College in September 2007 (date TBA), before the Music Director and a committee of his choosing. They will be notified of their status as finalists by phone or email, and results of the preliminary round will be posted on the SWSO website (www.southwestsymphony.org). Please bring a copy of your music for the panel (will be returned following audition).

Finalists must be accompanied by piano at the live audition. A list of local accompanists will be provided upon request. Preference may be given to finalists who perform from memory.

Salute to Youth Winners will perform their selections with the Southwest Symphony on its Salute to Youth Concert on March 20 and 21, 2008, and must attend rehearsals as required by the Music Director.
